An inn to inn hiking trip is a walking journey where you hike from one town or village to the next, staying in comfortable inns, guesthouses, or small hotels along the way. Rather than returning to the same place each night, you move through the landscape gradually and experience each region more deeply.
Not at all! Many inn to inn routes are designed for active travelers rather than expert hikers. The focus is usually on steady daily walking rather than technical terrain. If you’re comfortable being active for several hours a day and enjoy spending time outdoors, you may be a great fit. We can suggest some specific ways to be prepared to make the experience more enjoyable!
At Walnut Path Travel, we aim for most hiking days to fall between 6 - 10 miles. Some days may be a little shorter or longer depending on the route and destination, but the goal is to create a pace that feels active while still leaving time to enjoy the experience along the way. We build in opportunities to stop for coffee, explore villages, take photos, and enjoy the landscape rather than treating the walk like a race. Most itineraries also include a rest day midway through the trip in a scenic and interesting destination where travelers can recharge, explore at a slower pace, or simply enjoy staying put for a night or two.
Walnut Path trips include luggage transfer service between accommodations, so you only need to carry a comfortable daypack while walking. Most travelers bring water, layers, snacks, sunscreen, and any personal essentials they may want access to during the day. Many hikers will find having hiking poles to be supportive, but that's a personal preference.
Inn to inn hiking usually focuses on locally owned guesthouses, historic inns, small hotels, or family-run accommodations that reflect the character of the region. Some are simple and cozy, while others are more upscale. Comfort, hospitality, and local character matter more than luxury. Our favorite guest house offered boot and coat dryers along with inexpensive laundry service.
The trips are designed around the shared experience of walking from place to place together on our hiking days, but we also understand that every traveler has different needs and energy levels. The pace is intentionally thoughtful, and there’s room to move at a comfortable rhythm throughout the day. If someone needs accommodations due to weather, fatigue, or another circumstance, we’ll help make adjustments!
These trips are generally more about enjoying the journey than moving quickly. There’s time to stop for coffee, explore villages, visit wineries or historic sites, and take in the landscape along the way. We'll take into account daylight, times when local shops close, and other things specific to each trip and destination.
Part of the experience is adapting to changing conditions, but safety and comfort always come first. A light rain often becomes part of the adventure, while more serious weather may require route adjustments or alternate plans.
Yes. Walnut Path inn to inn trips are guided and hosted, which means you’ll have support throughout the experience while still having space to enjoy the journey at your own pace. We handle the logistics, help travelers feel comfortable navigating each day, and create opportunities for connection with the places and communities we visit.
Inn to inn hiking appeals to travelers who enjoy active days, cultural connection, and a slower pace of travel. You do not need to be an athlete - just someone who enjoys walking, exploring, and spending time outdoors.
Many travelers find that walking changes the way they experience a place. You notice details you might miss from a car or tour bus, and the gradual pace creates a stronger sense of connection to the landscape and communities along the route. No two days will feel the same, and there are plenty of fun surprises along the way.
